NGD – Axis Super Sport

The other day, I went to band practice and my drummer arrived with a nice molded flight case with a practically new Ernie Ball Musicman Axis Super Sport inside it. He casually hands it over to me and says, “play it…it’s been sitting in a corner in my house because I have no time to play it, besides, I’m a drummer! What do I need such a nice guitar for?”

He had gotten the guitar as a payment for some computer work that he did and apparently hates to see something as nice as this guitar just go to waste.

Being a previous owner of an Ernie Ball John Petrucci model, I got very excited and proceeded to lay down my Strat and strap on the Musicman. Well, let’s just say that I was floored! I loved the Petrucci when I had it but this thing seemed to fit me a lot better and was a dream to play (like all Ernie’s are!). So, we decided that I needed to buy this from him and he just said to give him the money whenever I got the chance. Cool!

So, next day comes along and I get an email from him. He says, “how about an even trade for your PRS?” Hmmm…

A couple years ago, my girlfriend bought me a sweet Paul Reed Smith CE-22. Amazing guitar but it just didn’t seem to sound great with my amp, a Fender Supersonic half-stack. I played it home through Guitar Rig using a JCM-800 setting and it sounded amazing — just could never dial a good tone with the Fender amp. This meant that my trusty Fender American Deluxe Strat (that sounds absolutely heavenly though the Supersonic) was my main gigging guitar and I used the PRS as a backup.

So, after a bit of thinking it over and running it by the girlfriend first since it was a gift, we made the deal. Yes, the PRS is a damn fine guitar but for me, the Axis Super Sport won me over. The cool thing is that I always know where that PRS is if I ever want to just buy it back!
