Had this amazing submission come in by one of our awesome readers that I definitely have to show off. Really good build here! I have to say, this is certainly a great alternative to a more expensive Fender Custom Shop piece.

Tell Us About Your New Guitar:
This guitar is a prototype project that I made aiming at creating a strat style guitar with basic looks and sounds of a 62-ish fender with a few modern features. Japanese 21 band rosewood fretboard neck and alder body with candy apple red finish from Hosowaka. The pickups in it are for the moment Dimarzio virtual vintage ‘54 neck and ‘54 bridge, but I’m probably replacing them with Lundgren pickups (http://www.lundgren.se/). Classic Kluson style Gotoh tuners together with Graph-tech saddle and two-point pivot Wilkinson tremolo provides classic look, nice sound and increased tuning stability, compared to the specifications of 60’s Fenders.

Story:
My options to getting my dream guitar together seemed few. Either make it Fender custom shop, which was for economical and principal reasons was not a suitable option, or building it myself. By putting it together myself I was able to get all the parts that I wanted this guitar to feature. I am very happy with it, especially for being just a prototype.

This one really goes to show that you do not need to spend a ton of cash in order to get a great guitar. I mean, just look at the pictures, this Ibanez looks like something any pro would play — and some of them probably would! The thing even came stock with EMG designed pickups. What did the owner say about it?

Tell Us About Your New Guitar:
She’s an Ibanez RG2EX1 and her name is Selene. She may not be a $1k+ guitar, but she sure does play like one… Whoever crafted her at that Cort Factory in Indonesia back in 2006 was being very careful and masterful with their work that day. Right now, she has her stock EMG Designed pickups, but those are to be replaced by Seymour Duncans or DiMarzios someday. I would also swap the tuners to locking ones; not that the stock ones are bad, but I’d rather have the confidence of locking tuners.

Story:
I was browsing eBay one day when I came about a new Buy It Now post for an RG2EX1 for $176 including a guitar stand (about $30), and a Monster instrument cable (about $20). I quickly established communication with the seller, and bought her the next day.

What he says about the craft person that built it on whatever particular day it had been done is so true. I find that you can sometimes take the same brand and model of guitar made in different times, say the same year but not the same month, and sometimes you can find that one is considerably better than the other. This has to do with a lot of different things going on — availability of wood at that particular time, mood of the builder on that particular day (maybe he/she got lucky the night before and is in a really good mood!), the temperature on the day the necks or bodies were made (temperature has a huge effect on wood), and a number of other things. This is why it is very important to play a guitar before you buy it. Of course, in the case of this one we are showing now, that was not possible since it was eBay, but hey….it was a deal that he didn’t want to pass up and I probably would have done the same thing. Sweet guitar and a damn good price (with accessories included!).

Cort G250 RMS. I’m no expert in guitars but the tone’s fantastic, nice and comfy to play/carry/hold. Perfect for those who want a more modern looking strat style
guitar. Coil tapped humbucker in the Bridge position.

Story:
Returning to playing after many failed attempts and many not so good guitar based purchases! Thought I’d try something a little different by avoiding the usual suspects such as Fender (incl Squier) and Epiphone.

I can relate to not so good guitar purchases as well but it helped me learn what I liked and didn’t like. In my 20+ years of playing, I have lost count of how many guitars I have owned but now that I see this Cort, it reminds me that this is a brand that I’ve never even played before. Something I definitely need to remedy soon!

The other day, I went to band practice and my drummer arrived with a nice molded flight case with a practically new Ernie Ball Musicman Axis Super Sport inside it. He casually hands it over to me and says, “play it…it’s been sitting in a corner in my house because I have no time to play it, besides, I’m a drummer! What do I need such a nice guitar for?”

He had gotten the guitar as a payment for some computer work that he did and apparently hates to see something as nice as this guitar just go to waste.

Being a previous owner of an Ernie Ball John Petrucci model, I got very excited and proceeded to lay down my Strat and strap on the Musicman. Well, let’s just say that I was floored! I loved the Petrucci when I had it but this thing seemed to fit me a lot better and was a dream to play (like all Ernie’s are!). So, we decided that I needed to buy this from him and he just said to give him the money whenever I got the chance. Cool!

So, next day comes along and I get an email from him. He says, “how about an even trade for your PRS?” Hmmm…

A couple years ago, my girlfriend bought me a sweet Paul Reed Smith CE-22. Amazing guitar but it just didn’t seem to sound great with my amp, a Fender Supersonic half-stack. I played it home through Guitar Rig using a JCM-800 setting and it sounded amazing — just could never dial a good tone with the Fender amp. This meant that my trusty Fender American Deluxe Strat (that sounds absolutely heavenly though the Supersonic) was my main gigging guitar and I used the PRS as a backup.

So, after a bit of thinking it over and running it by the girlfriend first since it was a gift, we made the deal. Yes, the PRS is a damn fine guitar but for me, the Axis Super Sport won me over. The cool thing is that I always know where that PRS is if I ever want to just buy it back!
